The PLEK is a state-of-the-art, computer-aided machine designed to achieve unparalleled precision in guitar setup and fretwork. It addresses common playability issues, ensuring a perfectly balanced instrument that looks, sounds, and, most importantly, plays beautifully.
Using advanced CNC technology, the PLEK machine scans the guitar neck while it is under string tension, identifying any imperfections in the fretboard and frets. It can then shape the fingerboard surface, cut fret, nut, and saddle slots, and level and crown frets to an accuracy smaller than .001 inches. This precision allows for the optimal string action tailored to each musician's style, reducing string buzz, enhancing intonation, and improving overall playability.
While the PLEK machine provides the technical accuracy, its success depends on the expertise of the operator—a skilled luthier who understands the nuances of creating an instrument that feels comfortable and inspiring to play. At BR Fret Shop, we combine the revolutionary capabilities of the PLEK machine with our extensive experience to offer the highest quality setups for guitars, basses, mandolins, ukuleles, and more.

Once your instrument's unique needs are understood, it is securely mounted in the cradle of the PLEK machine. The PLEK then performs a meticulous scan of your instrument, measuring up and down each string at every fret position—capturing over 6,000 points of data while the instrument is strung up and tuned to pitch. This step is crucial, as it allows us to see how the neck behaves under actual playing conditions, revealing any natural bowing, twisting, or unevenness caused by string tension.
If the scan shows that the instrument
The PLEK computer generates a 3D digital map of your instrument’s neck, providing an incredibly detailed view of its current state. This scan identifies any imperfections, such as uneven fret height, neck twists, loose frets, or inconsistencies in fretboard relief. The virtual fretboard interface allows us to plan the precise adjustments needed to optimize playability, from setting the fretboard radius and neck relief to pinpointing high or low spots causing buzz.
After evaluating the scan and setting the parameters, the PLEK machine begins the processing phase. The strings are removed, and the instrument is scanned again to understand the neck’s geometry without tension. Using these measurements, the machine cuts the fingerboard or frets to the exact specifications required to achieve the perfect setup. The PLEK also cuts slots for the nut and saddle on acoustic guitars with unmatched accuracy.
Once the frets, nut, and saddle have been processed, the instrument is restrung and tuned. A final scan ensures all adjustments meet the precise specifications set earlier. If everything checks out, the frets are polished to a high-gloss finish, and the instrument moves to our bench for the final setup.
After the PLEK machine has done its job, we fine-tune your instrument by hand, adjusting factors like string height, action, and intonation to match your personal playing style. This one-on-one approach ensures your instrument feels and sounds just right for you.
